With almost 100 years of singing experience in male singing, a new era has commenced for the Sydney Male Choir.
Dean Southwood of Baulkham Hills, joined the choir midway through 2008 at 14 years of age, and is now a performing member of the Sydney Male Choir becoming the youngest member ever. Here Dean is accepting his choir tie from Alan Thrift, Musical Director and Tom Coghlan, Vice President. Dean's first concert with the choir was the 9th Annual Sydney City Concert titled “Some Enchanted Afternoon” of Song and Harmony which took place on 14th September 2008
Dean, a Year 9 student at Hills Grammar School in North West Sydney has a very musical bias. He has his Grade 6 in piano, plays clarinet, is in the School Choir, Concert Band and Orchestra and has been a member of the Australian Youth Choir for the past seven years. With some concern that he had outgrown the Youth Choir, the “Battle of the Choirs” television program brought to the surface Dean’s need to seek out a mature male voice choir after watching two of the competitors perform – The Barrilee Blokes and The Blenders.
He went to the Internet and found The Sydney Male Choir.
Dean is multi-talented. This article appeared in the Hills News on 28 April 2009
